Prom Dress Shopping FAQs | Doncaster
I still remember my Mum never letting me wear makeup to school discos and parties. So naturally, I’d sneak round to a friend’s house and make a pretty terrible attempt at doing it myself.
Funny how some things don’t change. Mums still see the little girl they dropped off at primary school, while you’re trying to convince them you’ve actually grown up.
That’s where we come in.
Need help getting Mum on board with a look? Want recommendations for makeup artists, hair, shoes or anything else Prom? Or just need someone in your corner when you’re trying to explain what you actually want?
Give your stylist the nod. We’ll bring it up so you don’t have to.
We’re not here just to find you a dress.
Consider us your Prom cheerleaders.
1. When should I start shopping for my prom dress?
Earlier than you think! The most popular styles and colours are usually the first to go, especially once girls from your school start shopping. For Prom 2027, our appointments start from October half term onwards if you want the biggest choice.
2. How much should I expect to spend on a prom dress?
Prom dresses vary hugely depending on the designer, fabric and detail. At The Prom Edit, we'll always be upfront about prices and help you find something you love within your budget — no awkwardness required. To give you an idea our price range is £299 - £699
3. Do I need an appointment to try on prom dresses?
We recommend booking, especially at weekends and during busy prom-shopping season. It means we can give you the full Prom Edit experience, with your own Prom Room and Personal Prom Stylist ready for you, although we will try to accommodate you if you are popping in
4. What happens at a Prom Personal Shopper appointment?
This is your celebrity-style fitting moment. You'll have your own Prom Room, your own stylist and even your choice of music. We'll pull dresses, suggest styles you might never have considered, take photos and help you in and out of the dresses and help find the one that makes you feel incredible. And yes, our Personal Shopper service is completely free.
5. How do I know which prom dress style will suit me?
You don't need to know before you come! That's what we're here for. Try the fitted one, the huge princess dress, the colour you swore you'd never wear — sometimes the dress is the one you weren't expecting.
6. What sizes can I try on at The Prom Edit?
Our Prom Edit collection includes dresses in sizes 4–16, so you can actually try different shapes and styles rather than having to imagine what they'll look like.
7. What if someone from my school chooses the same dress?
We've got you. Our Prom Edit Promise means we won't sell the same dress in the same colour to the same event. Once yours is registered, it's yours.
8. Can I order my prom dress in another colour?
Often, yes. Many of our prom dresses are available in different colours, depending on the designer and how early you are shopping. The earlier you shop the more options you have. Ask your stylist and we'll show you what's possible.
9. Who should I bring prom dress shopping?
Bring the people whose opinion you actually trust. Mum, Dad, Nan, your sister or your best friend — you don't need a huge entourage. Too many opinions can sometimes make choosing your dress much harder.
10. How far in advance should I order my prom dress?
We start taking bookings on Oct 24th. Designer dresses can need to be ordered months ahead, and popular styles, colours and sizes can sell out. Shopping early gives you more choice and plenty of time for any alterations before the big night.
11. Where can I buy prom dresses in Doncaster?
You'll find The Prom Edit at Holmes & Co in Doncaster city centre, with girls travelling to us from across South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire, including Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Worksop and Retford. Come for the dresses, stay for the Personal Shopper experience.
12. What if I feel awkward or self-conscious trying on prom dresses?
Completely normal. You don't need to know how to pose, what suits you or even what you're looking for. Your stylist is there to make it easy, help with the dresses, take the photos and hype you up when you find the one. No awkward fitting-room moment required.
13. What if I love a dress but everyone I’ve brought with me hates it?
This is your Prom, but we know it’s not always easy to say that when everyone outside the changing room has an opinion.
So we have a secret code. If you’re in the Prom Room and need your stylist to step in, just say “Can we try the wild card?”
That’s our cue. We’ll know you need a little help taking back control of the appointment — without you having to explain a thing in front of everyone. We will bring a dress very similar to your fave, to refocus the vibe and ask you which you prefer, to get you back on track
What happens in the Prom Room stays in the Prom Room
14. Do you offer a payment plan for prom dresses?
Yes. Finding the dress doesn’t mean everything has to be paid for at once. We offer payment options so the cost can be spread out, making it easier to budget between choosing your dress and Prom night. Ask us about the payment plan when you book or at your appointment and we’ll explain exactly how it works.
15. What should I wear to my prom appointment
Honestly? Don’t overthink it. Wear underwear you’re comfortable being seen in while we help you in and out of dresses, although plenty of our dresses don’t need a bra at all.
Hair and a little makeup can help you picture the finished look, but come however you feel most like you. We’ll sort the glam part.
