Your camera roll is full of dresses. The group chat has opinions. And somehow, you’ve gone from wanting sleek satin to considering a full princess moment.

Welcome to your prom dress era.

Finding the perfect prom dress starts with a silhouette you love, a colour that makes you feel good and a fit you can actually enjoy wearing. Add a little expert styling and enough time to explore your options, and shopping can become one of the best parts of your prom plans.

From silhouettes and fabrics to budgeting and booking, here’s your guide to finding your dress for prom 2027.

Start with your vibe

Before deciding on a specific dress, think about how you want to feel.

Maybe it’s red-carpet glamour with a fitted skirt and sparkle. Maybe it’s romantic layers, a dramatic ballgown or a simple satin dress with beautiful details.

Save a few favourite looks and work out what keeps catching your eye: the neckline, the colour, the shape or the way the skirt moves. You don’t need a perfectly curated Pinterest board. A handful of screenshots is a great starting point.

And leave room for a plot twist. The dress you love on yourself might look nothing like the one you saved.

Which prom dress silhouette should you choose?

A silhouette is simply the overall shape of a dress. Trying a few different shapes helps you discover what feels right.

A-line: soft movement and easy elegance

An A-line dress fits through the bodice and gradually widens towards the hem. It’s a lovely option if you want a defined waist and a skirt with room to move.

Try it if you’re picturing romantic photographs, a little swish and plenty of dancing.

Ballgown: your big dress moment

A fitted bodice and full skirt create that unmistakable princess effect. Choose smooth fabric for a sculptural look or layers of tulle for something softer.

During your appointment, practise sitting down and walking around. Your entrance matters, but so does enjoying the rest of the night.

Fishtail or mermaid: red-carpet drama

A fishtail dress follows the body before flaring out lower down the skirt. It creates a dramatic

shape, especially with a structured bodice or statement embellishment.

Check how comfortably you can take a full step and climb stairs, as some designs allow more movement than others.

Fitted or column: sleek and understated

These dresses follow a narrower line, with less volume through the skirt. They can feel beautifully simple in satin or make a statement with all-over sparkle.

Pay attention to the lining, stretch and how the dress feels when you sit.

You don’t need to dress for a “body type”. Use silhouettes to explore what you enjoy wearing. The dress should fit you comfortably.

What prom dress details are inspiring 2027?

Corset bodices, ruffled skirts and crystal embellishment are among the details highlighted in our Prom 2027 trend guide.

A corset-style bodice can bring structure to either a fitted dress or a fuller skirt. Ruffles add movement, while crystals can create anything from a subtle shimmer to a full sparkle moment.

Choose the details you genuinely love. You’ll enjoy your photographs much more if you recognise yourself in them. Whether you love a modest neckline and extra coverage or an open back and a more daring cut, choose a dress that shows only as much skin as you feel comfortable with—your prom look should feel completely you.

How to choose your prom dress colour

Have the colour chat in your group chat before anyone buys—are you matching, choosing shades that complement each other or letting everyone do their own thing? Agreeing the vibe now avoids any accidental girl-group dress-code drama later.

The best prom dress colour is one you feel excited to wear. Start with shades you naturally love, then try something unexpected alongside them.

Look at the colour near your face and, where possible, in different lighting. We are here for the photos too, we will happily create some sharable images and videos for you

Which fabric is best for a prom dress?

Fabric changes how a dress looks, moves and feels. Two dresses with a similar shape can give completely different effects.

Fabric or finish

The look

What to check when trying it on

Stretch Satin

Smooth, glossy and elegant

How it feels when seated

Mikado Satin

This looks expensive and feel royal

Again check how you feel when sat down especially if a fishtail design

Tulle

Airy layers and fuller skirts

The softness of the lining and volume of the skirt and weather you need a hoop.

Chiffon

Light, flowing movement

An easy fabric to wear

Stretch jersey

Soft skindrape and a closer fit

Comfortable stretch and support

Organza

Crisp, lightweight structure

How the volume feels when walking and sitting

Sequins or beading

Texture and light-catching sparkle

Weight and comfort around your arms and the price, these are often the most expensive

Sequins and beads are embellishments rather than fabrics, so check what’s underneath them too. A beautiful finish should still feel comfortable against your skin, and this is often the sign of a good quality dress, nobody wants a rash on Prom Night. Needless to say, you are safe with dresses from the Prom Edit at Holmes and Co Bridal.

How to make your prom appointment count

Agree your budget before shopping

If someone else is paying, agree a comfortable total together before trying things on.

A payment plan can help spread the cost, but the full price should still fit your budget.

Bring inspiration and an open mind

Show your stylist what you like about your saved dresses. “I love this neckline” is more useful than feeling you must find an exact copy.

We will often suggest a style we think will look great on you, we cant help our selves, We recommend giving them a go, we know our dresses inside out.

Girl Prom Dress Shopping

Choose your shopping company carefully

Bring someone who listens to what you love. A supportive second opinion is helpful; a fitting-room debate can make choosing harder.

Give every favourite a movement check

Sit down, walk, lift your arms and do a small dance-floor test. Check that the neckline feels secure and that you aren’t constantly adjusting anything.

Delivery and alterations

We can often check if a dress is in stock if we don't have your size or colour, which generally means it be here within a month, if you chosen dress isn't in stock, we will confirm a delivery time once the designer has confirmed with us. We can recommend some seamstresses and we recommend you book you space with them straight away as Prom dress altering gets very busy.
